BrendaBear Foundation

The BrendaBear Foundation is a nonprofit organization created to honor the life and legacy of the Late Brenda Jean Harrison-Jones—an educator, caregiver, and advocate who spent 45 years serving children, youth with disabilities, and the broader community. Inspired by her painful experiences of medical neglect and racial bias in healthcare, our Foundation addresses the systemic disparities that impact how African American patients—especially women, children, and elders—are treated for chronic pain.
Through advocacy, education, and community-based healing, we challenge the legacy of racism in medicine and amplify the voices of those living with chronic pain. Our programs include the BrendaBear Coloring Book Initiative, Annual Pain Awareness Walk, the Brenda’s Art of Giving Award Gala, and a targeted scholarship fund—all rooted in the principles of equity, compassion, and justice.
Our Mission:
The BrendaBear Foundation exists to expose and dismantle racial disparities in pain management within the medical system. We advocate for equitable and compassionate care for Black individuals suffering from chronic pain by promoting education, raising awareness, supporting research, and building community support systems that channels enlivened experiences and justice.
Our Vision
We envision a healthcare system where pain is believed, assessed without bias, and treated equitably—regardless of race. In this vision, black and brown patients will receive the same quality of care, compassion, and medical intervention afforded by others, and communities are empowered to speak out against injustice and neglect.
